FUNKE shell-and-tube heat exchangers

Our shell-and-tube heat exchangers for universal use in mechanical and system engineering are predominantly used to cool fluids such as lubricating and hydraulic oil or water, and for heating on the basis of saturated steam. Water, water/glycol mixtures or seawater can be used as cooling media. Whether it is a series model or a custom solution, more than 200 graduated sizes in various material designs form the basis for optimal and detailed type selection.

Custom solutions, shell-and-tube heat exchangers

In addition to its series models, FUNKE supplies custom solutions in the shell-and-tube heat exchanger segment. The requirements of the customer are given top priority. As part of the project engineering, the optimal thermodynamic solution is developed on the basis of the operating data, building regulations and specifications. We are committed to finding a technically and economically optimised solution that fully satisfies both the needs of the customer and our standards for maximum system safety and efficiency.

We produce custom shell-and-tube heat exchangers with diameters of up to 3,000 mm and maximum weights of up to 60 t. Custom external and internal coatings can also be realised, such as seawater- and acid-resistant coatings on the inside of the tubes and on the tube bundles.

Series of custom shell-and-tube heat exchangers

CP (TEMA type W)

Design features

  • Robust design, removable smooth tube or finned tube bundle facilitates inspection
  • Safety sealing of the floating tube sheet thanks to two seals and intermediate ring with signal holes

Application

For universal use for the heat exchange of fluids and the cooling of gases. Typical applications: oil cooling in hydraulics, in large engines and in shipbuilding. Can be used as intermediate cooler and aftercooler for compressors, as condenser etc.

A-100 (TEMA type W)

Design features

  • 1-way, removable smooth tube bundle with floating base
  • Broad size graduation thanks to large number of standardised units

Application

Cooling and drying of process gases or compressed air. Used as intermediate cooler or aftercooler in compressor engineering. With gas routed through the tubes, highly suitable as pipeline cooler in gas pipeline network.

C-100 (TEMA type P)

Design features

  • The removable tube bundle with ring seal enables greater length differences resulting from different heat expansion between shell and inner tubes
  • The tube bundle can be removed without loosening the end cap of the floating base

Application

A heat exchanger that is suitable for the thermal treatment of various media, air or gases. Can be used as intermediate cooler or aftercooler.

C-200 (TEMA type M)

Design features

  • Non-removable tube bundle with or without compensator in the shell
  • Very good heat transfer performance thanks to maximum exchange area in the shell

Application

For cooling and heating various media and for use in various processes in mechanical and system engineering.

C-300 (TEMA type U)

Design features

  • The removable U-tube bundle with ring seal enables greater length differences resulting from different heat expansion between shell and inner tubes

Application

Especially suitable for cooling and heating of various media at higher pressures. Can be used as steam generator and condenser and in processes with large temperature differences

C-400 (TEMA type T)

Design features

  • Removable tube bundle with a deflection chamber fastened to the floating tube sheet
  • Tube bundle can be removed without loosening the deflection chamber
  • This version has a large bundle inlet zone

Application

Process cooler, intermediate cooler and aftercooler for gases and air, condenser for vapours. Applications mainly in the chemicals industry.

C-500 (TEMA type S)

Design features

  • Removable tube bundle with deflection chamber fastened on the inside with clamping ring design
  • Designed for strong heat expansion differences between shell and inner tubes
  • Largest exchange area with shell diameter equivalent to other types

Application

For the highest requirements (e.g. high temperature differences) in the chemicals industry and in refineries. In addition to the thermal treatment of liquid media, the C-500 can be used to cool gases or air and as a steam condenser.

WRA (TEMA type M)

Design features

  • Designed as exhaust gas heat exchanger with heat shield at gas inlet of fixed tube bundle
  • Inlet temperatures up to 600° C
  • Inspection cover facilitates cleaning of the flue gas side

Application

Heat recovery from the exhaust gases of combustion engines, e.g. gas, diesel and fuel oil engines.

FUNKE safety heat exchangers

Shell-and-tube heat exchanger in safety design

In the chemicals, pharmaceutical or food industries, shipbuilding or energy generation – safety heat exchangers are used wherever strict requirements apply to product cleanliness in process technology, contamination of cooling or process water would pose an environmental risk or media mixing could result in machine or system damage. This is made possible by a double-tube system with the medium being directed into a safety zone if a tube defect occurs and this zone being monitored by the system monitoring. This means that leaks can be detected early on and media mixing can be avoided.

How safety heat exchangers work
V = equalising tank, P = pressure monitor, yellow area = safety zone
